One Snowy Night
By M. Christina Butler
Illustrator Tina Macnaughton
Publisher Good Books
Little Hedgehog is awakened from his deep winter sleep by the cold wind. Trying hard to get back to sleep despite the cold, hedgehog is startled when a present from Father Christmas lands right in front of his nose. It's a bright red wooly hat, fuzzy too as children can experience in this touch-and-feel book. It doesn't quite fit what with all Little Hedgehog's prickles, so he wraps it back up to give to Rabbit, delivers it, and sets off back home in the midst of a snowstorm. Rabbit is delighted with the hat, but has problems fitting it around his long ears. Slowly the hat is gifted from one forest animal to another until at last it fits Fox who discovers Little Hedgehog buried under the snow freezing. Wrapping him in the red wooly hat, Fox takes him to Badger's where Little Hedgehog declares the hat to be a lovely warm blanket and the other friends decide the hat is just right for Little Hedgehog. Father Christmas knew all along that Little Hedgehog needed a lovely warm blanket and good friends.
One Snowy Night is a winsome picture book that emphasizes generosity of spirit. As the story progresses, the illustrations move from the blues of a cold winter day to the cozy warmth of a fire-lit room. Children and parents will find this story lovely and warm.
