Alligator at Saw Grass Road
By Janet Halfmann
Illustrator Lori Anzalone
Soundprints
Beautifully illustrated, Alligator at Saw Grass Road is an outstanding nature title for young children. It takes a sympathetic look at how a fearsome creature, the alligator, builds her nest, lays her eggs, and protects her young. Attention to detail and accuracy are a hallmark of the Smithsonian Backyard series. This is true of both text and illustrations, which provide a glimpse that children rarely see of an alligator caring for her young along with the eggs of a red bellied turtle that takes advantage of the alligator’s guardianship. This title was reviewed by Eli Bryant-Cavazos of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoological Park. I highly recommend it to readers who love to learn about wild life and their habitats.
