A Creature Was Stirring
Author Carter Goodrich and Clement Clarke Moore
Publisher Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing

Open this book, move past the golden endpapers to find an beloved, old treasure made new. You see contrary to the tale told in "A Visit from Saint Nicholas", there was a creature stirring, a little boy, the narrator of the right hand side of each page of this book. Unable to sleep, he is wide-awake as Santa arrives. The traditional tale of Santa’s visit is told on the left-hand page while across from it the stirrings of our wakeful boy play out. Oh, he tries to resist. He even lies perfectly still trying to pretend he’s dead. But who can resist? Santa’s on the roof! Fortunately for Santa, rather than stay in bed, our hero climbs out the window to the roof and manages to keep Santa’s sleigh from sliding off the roof. Carter Goodrich’s illustrations perfectly capture the turmoil of a little boy caught between remaining on Santa’s nice list and catching a peek of that right jolly old elf. A Creature Was Stirring is my pick for best Christmas picture book of 2006.
