Duck Soup
By Jackie Urbanovic
HarperCollins Publishers

Max’s attempts at preparing the perfect soup have been many and varied, Cracker Barrel Cheese and Marshmallow amongst others. His friends have greeted his chefly concoctions with varying degrees of approval. Max decides one day rather than using another chef’s recipe as he has always done, to create his very own soup. In search of the perfect last ingredient, Max heads to the garden. While he’s away, his friends arrive and conclude Max has fallen into his pot of soup. Their comical efforts to save him destroy the soup, leaving Max somewhat dejected but agreeing with his friends that he’s happy he’s not the main ingredient in duck soup. More than the title of this picture book will remind adult readers of the slapstick comedy of the Marx Brothers, and children will giggle at antics of Urbanovic’s expressive characters.
