Eight Lights for Eight Nights: A Hanukkah Story and Activity Book
By Debbie Herman
Illustrator Ann Koffsky
Publisher Barron's Educational Series
Eight Lights for Eight Nights is a colorfully illustrated, child-pleasing blend of story, interesting facts, and activities. The telling of how Judah Maccabee and his followers defeated Antiochus IV and resisted the destruction of Jewish religious practices in Israel in the 2nd Century AD and the miracle of the oil for the menorah that burned far longer than it should have is presented from a modern Jewish perspective with a nod towards respecting other faith practices. The activities use a combination of household craft resources and items that will need to be purchased. Most of the crafts are items children will be pleased to have made. Make your own candle or oil menorah, dreidel, and latkes. The crafts will work for individual families or groups of children. There is also information about how to light your menorah and play with your dreidel. Part of the Let's Celebrate Series from Barron's, Eight Lights for Eight Nights is an inexpensive means for creating your own unit study on Hanukkah.
