Grandpa for Sale
By Dotti Enderle & Vicki Sansum
Illustrator T. Kyle Gentry
Flashlight Press
Lizzie's minding the store while her mother is out, just ten minutes. During those ten minutes in walks Mrs. Bradley Larchmont the Third dressed all in pink, carrying a poodle named Giselle, and wearing a hairstyle to match the poodle's. She's obviously a woman of eccentricity and money. Browsing she discovers several items to buy, and then her eyes latch on to Grandpa who is snoozing on a Louis XVI settee. She thinks Grandpa is a charming antique and wants to buy him. A bargaining session ensues with the woman offering an ever higher price and Lizzie thinking of what she could do with that amount of money then deciding without Grandpa the glorious possibilities weren't worth it. Grandpa for Sale charmingly points out that our family members really are priceless. The illustrations of the antique store and Lizzie's imaginary ways of spending the money are richly detailed. Gentry contrasts bright energetic colors and grays to visually illustrate that no wonderful dream of future delights is complete without Grandpa.
