The Little Drummer Mouse
Illustrator Mercer Mayer
Publisher Dial Books for Young Readers
ders

This retelling of "The Little Drummer Boy" tale has the youngest and smallest of a large mouse family in the role of tiny drummer. Put upon by his family and neighbors, the little drummer mouse took to drumming for the stars on the little drum his mother had made him from an acorn so she could always hear where he was. News of a royal family, who would shortly travel through their woods on the way to the town where their new baby king was to be born, sends the animals into a flurry of preparation. The royal family never comes leaving the animals disappointed. Only a poor family with the wife riding on a donkey travels through. Making the best of things, the animals have their celebration without the guests of honor. Later that night, the little drummer mouse sees a new star out his window and hurries outside to play his drum for this new star. One thing leads to another, and he find himself playing for the new baby king born in a stable.

Children will identify with the little drummer mouse and his notion that he’s not big enough to really matter, a notion strongly supported by the other woodland animals. The very thing that he has been teased about turns into a gift for a king. The illustrations of The Little Drummer Mouse are luxuriantly detailed with a richness that makes this book a visual treat as well as a charming story.
