Math Appeal: Mind Stretching Math Riddles
By
Greg Tang
Illustrator
Harry Briggs
Publisher
Scholastic Press
Each two page spread of Math Appeal includes a math riddle written in rhyme with an accompanying illustration. Each rhyme ends with a problem solving hint. Problem solving strategies used in the book include regrouping, using symmetry, finding patterns, adding up easy sums (10's, 11's, 12's) then adding these answers to get your final answer.
These math riddles were written for concrete thinkers. Those children who have experience with or a gift for mental math should be able to solve these problems. Others may need the help of manipulatives or pencil and paper to solve the problems. The book was written for 7 to 10-year-olds and requires an understanding of addition and subtraction.
