The National Review Treasury of Classic Bedtime Stories
By Thornton Burgess
Illustrator Harrison Cady
Publisher ISI Books

Thornton Burgess's stories about the adventures of Uncle Billy Possum, Jeremy Muskrat, and the other denizens of the Green Meadows and Green Forest make perfect bedtime reading. These captivating characters find themselves in various difficulties creating moral dilemmas for them, dilemmas that children can relate to their own experiences. The consequences for poor decisions are borne by the characters in the story, rather than the child in real life. That's not to say that these stories are preachy lessons on the virtuous life. Far from it. They are delightful tales that will totally engage the young child. Reading about the consequences that Uncle Billy Possum pays for playing tricks will help the child internalize the idea that most people get angry when you play tricks on them. These are all stories with a moral to them, but they are first entertaining stories.

Treasury of Classic Bedtime Stories contains ten of Burgess's animal tales. Each is broken into short chapters. Reading a chapter a night would take you through most of a year. It's doubtful that anyone could keep such a snails pace, though. Children and parents both will find themselves routinely reading just one more chapter.

The quaint black and white illustrations by Harrison Cady will appeal to children of today as much as they did to children of the early twentieth century when these stories were first published. However, there is nothing dated in these stories. They belong on any child's bedside table.

Hardback, 349 pages.
