Once Upon a Time, the End (Asleep in 60 Seconds)
By Geoffrey Kloske
Illustrator Barry Blitt
Publisher Atheneum Books for Young Readers

What’s a father to do when his child requires yet another good night story? Especially when said child shows absolutely no signs of sleeping? One father’s answer is to abbreviate the story telling. The quickie versions of “Chicken Little;” “The Two Little Pigs,” “Small Girl, Red Hood,” “Goldilocks and the Bears,“ “Princess Pea,” and “The Little Red Hen” are all reeled off as rapidly as possible even to the condensing of three pigs to two. Nothing works however. The tales continue but now with not so subtle suggestions that sleeping is a good thing. Reduced to riddles such as, “Why did the chicken cross the road? To go to sleep,” Dad falls asleep himself, and the son finally falls asleep atop Dad.
