The Queen's Pirate
By Jim Weiss
Publisher Greathall Productions

Jim Weiss turns his considerable storytelling talent to an important era in world history in The Queen's Pirate. As my husband suggested, "We could all be speaking Spanish now," if not for the events that happened during the reign of Elizabeth I of England. Weiss gives us a biography of Elizabeth, allowing Elizabeth herself to tell the story in a series of remembrances. From her remembrances of life as the daughter of King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, whom Henry later executed, Weiss rivets his audience with his captivating tale and voice characterizations. The second half of the audio CD takes up the story of Sir Francis Drake, the queen's pirate of the title. The story is told by one of Drake's captains and gives further detail to the significance of Elizabeth's reign and the role Drake played both in supplying much needed wealth to the realm and in the defeat of the Spanish armada. That defeat was the turning point in the decline of Spain and rise of England as a great sea power.

This CD is best suited for upper elementary and older children. The technique of telling Elizabeth's story by moving from Elizabeth in old age to episodes she remembers from her past is very well done, but could be a little harder for younger children to follow. I should say that my youngest daughter, age 12, who often has trouble with this type of story framework, did just fine with this CD.
