A Treasure Beyond Measure

A Treasure Beyond Measure is a unique illustration of Matthew 13:44, "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it, he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field."
How do you present such a verse in a way children will understand? Well, when you're author Melody Carlson and illustrator Steve Björkman, you do it very well!
A Treasure Beyond Measure tells the story of Fred, an ordinary man who discovers a treasure map that inspires an extraordinary journey. Selling all he has, he buys a boat, a dog, and a boatload of supplies, and then sets off to find the treasure. His trip is not easy, and when he finally arrives at 'the spot' he has nothing left but a rowboat and his watch...and his trusty hound, of course. He still believes in the map, however, so he gives the boat and watch in exchange for a tiny piece of land and, after much digging, Fred is "wealthy beyond measure".
Carlson tells the story in delightful rhyme and Björkman's tropically-hued watercolors are sure to please young readers. I would not have expected a children's book to present this particular verse so well; I wouldn't have expected an author to even think of trying. My hat's off to this talented team!
