Mei is just one of over 20 volunteers making these deliveries, and the Lees are two of about 1, Asian American senior citizens across the city who look forward to them every week. The effort began as the LovingChinatown initiative at the onset of the pandemic. And these are elderly who remind us of our own grandparents. They started by packaging meals and letters in their own kitchen.

In the San Francisco Bay Area, a spate of brutal attacks against older Asian Americans has galvanized a tightly connected, multiracial coalition of grassroots groups and independent activists. Compassion in Oakland , a group founded by Latino activist Jacob Azevedo, has more than volunteers to escort fearful elders on walks and errands around the neighborhood. A donation from the activist group Black Bay Area helped the Asian Health Services to support the victims of the recent assaults. While the Bay Area leads the way in cross-racial initiatives, similar efforts have popped up in other cities in the wake of the assaults.

Established in , Ascend has grown to serve professionals and corporations across various professions and across multiple industries.
