It is always interesting to study other cultures, and it is extremely important to do just that if you are going to have interactions with them. China is one of those interesting cultures mainly because what we usually know about the country is through movies or the local Chinese restaurant. A sincere study of a culture is the only way to truly appreciate the differences. So, being an American what do I see as the 13 biggest cultural differences between the two countries?

We all have an internal list of those we still don't understand, let alone appreciate. We all have biases, even prejudices, toward specific groups. In our workshops we ask people to gather in pairs and think about their hopes and fears in relating to people of a group different from their own. Fears usually include being judged, miscommunication, and patronizing or hurting others unintentionally; hopes are usually the possibility of dialogue, learning something new, developing friendships, and understanding different points of view. After doing this activity hundreds of times, I'm always amazed how similar the lists are.

Knowledge of the manner in which different features of a business are viewed in different cultures, can help a manager in understanding and sailing successfully across the international business market.




The culture a person is born into goes a long way toward determining that individual's behavior patterns, beliefs and values. Culture is defined as a shared set of practices or beliefs among a group of people in a particular place and time. Marketers, analysts and consumers themselves use an awareness of culture to learn how and why consumers in a particular culture behave the way they do. Culture is an important factor in determining consumer behavior.
